About Us

Online Degree Discussion started when a friend of mine's daughter started looking at colleges. She will be the first one in the family to hopefully finish her degree and I'm their resident expert. My expert status, in their eyes, comes from having completed a bachelor's degree in four years while maintaining an A average and a double major as well as earning my graduate degree while working full time.

As young Sara starts transitioning from high school to college, her mom is asking me more and more questions about college. I doubt they will opt for an online degree program but my research for them quickly discovered that there are some wonderful online degree programs and way too many con artists selling what amounts to snake oil.

My hope for this site is to continue my research by updating this site with news on various new online degree programs, diploma mills, green degrees and whatever else strikes my fancy. I'll try my best to offer advice that can be used by anyone with the same care and concern that I have been providing Sara.

About me specifically, I'm a professional copywriter by trade with degrees in Computer Science, Communication Arts and Computer Information Systems. Yes, I'm a geek. And yes, I think learning should never end. And, I firmly believe college and college textbooks are far too expensive. What started as a little section of this site - the free textbook lists - has turned into a major undertaking that I hope to continually keep updated.

I'd like to also take a moment to discuss the advertising which appears on OnlineDegreeDiscussion.com. While I will try my best to ensure that only advertising from legitimate educational institutions or other informational sites will appear on this site, they are being provided by Google and individual ad selection if pretty much out of my control. Unfortunately, with Google's interest tracking technology, the ads that I see may not be the same ones that this site's visitors will see which makes it virtually impossible to ensure that any bad ones are banned from my site. I strongly urge anyone pursuing online courses, online degrees or traditional courses to research the institution fully to ensure that it is accredited by a real accreditation organization and is not a diploma mill or legitimate school which has lost its accreditation.
