Carleton University Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Degrees

Beginning in the fall term of 2011, Carleton University will begin offering a Bachelor of Engineering in Architectural Conservation and Sustainability degree. The program includes restoring historical buildings, reusing and retrofitting existing buildings, and the construction of energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly buildings.

Designed to meet the rigors of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board requirements, Carleton is offering two streams of specialization. The structural program concentrates on the "conservation and sustainability in the design of new structures and the assessment and retrofit of existing structures." The environmental curriculum focuses on "sustainable building practices with an emphasis on air quality, disposal of materials and waste streams, life cycle analysis and water quality and conservation." All students are required to complete a design project and may also pursue co-op placements.

This green degree program is offered by many of the Carleton Engineering faculty already providing instruction to students interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering. Carlton also offers Master's degrees in Sustainable Energy Engineering and Sustainable Energy Policy.

Carleton offers a number of online courses. Their Carleton University Television (CUTV) program has been running since the late 1970s. Courses are available on broadcast television and on the Internet (as streams and downloads). Full credit and half credit courses are available in both core and elective courses toward degree completion. Students signed up for CUTV courses are also permitted to attend courses in-person on a space available basis. The program as has a video-on-demand option where students can pay a small fee to rent individual lectures.
