Georgetown University launched a new online graduate nursing program for the spring 2011 semester. The School of Nursing & Health Studies, which is part of Georgetown University Medical Center, has added this online graduate nursing degree program to its nationally ranked on-campus graduate program.
Streaming video, small group discussions and the option to visit campus and access its facilities and patient base are all part of the program. Students may complete the clinical portion of their studies at facilities near their homes rather than be required to travel to the Georgetown area.
Online students will need to meet the same rigorous admissions standards as their more traditional counterparts attending courses on-campus. Both degree programs are designed to for "high-achieving BSN-prepared registered nurses to become leaders in specialized areas of advanced practice nursing."
The first degree to be offered in the program is the Family Nurse Practitioner; degrees in other graduate nursing specialties will be added.
Georgetown's School of Nursing & Health Studies department has an average of 900 students enrolled in its undergraduate, second-degree and graduate degree programs. There are approximately 50 full-time and 90 part-time faculty members.
Georgetown was founded in 1789 and the Georgetown University Training School for Nurses was later founded in 1903. The name was changed to the School of Nursing & Health Studies in 2000 to reflect the school's widening degree offerings into such fields as Health Systems Administration, Human Science and International Health. The mission statement of the School of Nursing & Health Studies is to continue "its long tradition of preparing morally reflective health care leaders and scholars who strive to improve the health and well being of all people with the sensitivity to cultural differences and issues of justice."
